The acclaimed single-malt Scotch whisky, The Macallan , has reaffirmed its commitment to craftsmanship, creativity, and sustainability through a partnership with Alexis Galleries for the Recycling Matters II exhibition in Lagos.
The exhibition, which opened with a private viewing on February 7, 2026, brought together artists, collectors, cultural enthusiasts, media, and other stakeholders to celebrate contemporary African art that reimagines waste and sustainability.
Recycling Matters II showcased works by four contemporary Nigerian artists—Konboye Ebipade Eugene, Seye Morakinyo, Aliya Diseotu Victor, and Ibrahim Afegbua—developed during a recent residency. Through sculpture, assemblage, and mixed media, the artists transformed discarded materials such as rubber, scrap metal, fabric remnants, footwear, binding wires, and paper into expressive works that reflect Nigeria’s patterns of consumption, survival, and reinvention.
The collaboration aligns two entities dedicated to excellence and inspired creation. Just as The Macallan’s whiskies are crafted through meticulous selection and refinement, Alexis Galleries supports artists who push creative boundaries while delivering profound narrative depth.
The Senior Brand Manager, West and Central Africa, Edrington, Hammed Adebiyi, highlighted the significance of the partnership, “Our collaboration with Alexis Galleries aligns perfectly with The Macallan’s commitment to supporting creative communities and celebrating exceptional craftsmanship. Recycling Matters II embodies innovation, sustainability, and cultural pride—values that are integral to our brand.”
Curated by Uche Obasi, the exhibition serves as a social intervention exploring themes of waste, utility, and extended meaning within contemporary Nigerian society. The artists’ interdisciplinary practices transform overlooked materials into compelling sculptures and mixed-media narratives, inviting viewers to rethink environmental responsibility and the creative potential of discarded objects.
The Chief Executive Officer of Alexis Galleries, Patty Chidiac-Mastrogiannis, praised the partnership, “We are glad to have partnered with The Macallan for a second time for Recycling Matters II. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider waste as a resource for creative renewal and to reflect on the role of art in fostering environmental awareness and responsible material culture in Nigeria.”
The exhibition runs until February 21, offering visitors an opportunity to engage with contemporary African art that merges environmental consciousness with inventive storytelling.
