Galway produced one of the comebacks of the weekend on Saturday evening, battling back from 11 points down to earn a dramatic 3-14 to 2-17 draw against Kerry in Tralee.

This result was made all the more remarkable when you look at the number of players Galway were without. Seán Fitzgerald, Paul Conroy, Matthew Thompson, Cillian McDaid, Shane Walsh, Damien Comer, and Liam Silke all not in action for various reasons.

Matthew Tierney struck 1-4 while Shane McGrath, who finished with 0-5 from play, claimed man of the match as Joyce’s side rescued a result that looked unlikely for long stretches. The draw leaves Galway with three points from their opening three games, following a win over Armagh and an opening round defeat at home to Mayo.

Pádraic Joyce Adds Former Intercounty Manager To Galway Backroom Team

Former Cavan manager Raymond Galligan has joined Pádraic Joyce’s backroom team, with footage shared by Galway GAA showing him arriving alongside the squad, confirming reporting from The Irish Examiner’s Maurice Brosnan.

Raymond Galligan brings significant experience to the setup. The Lacken clubman won an All-Star in goals in 2020 and famously captained Cavan to their Ulster title that same year, ending a 23-year provincial wait. He later stepped into management with his county before stepping away from the role last season.

His arrival means Padraic Joyce now has a second Cavan influence in the camp, with former Breffni boss Mickey Graham already involved as a coach.

Raymond Galligan was part of the panel on League Sunday last night, with his involvement with Galway being discussed. He remained fairly coy on the specifics of his role.

It’s very minimal at the moment what I’m adding to the setup.

I’ve just been down a couple of times over the last few weeks doing workshops with the group. I’m just trying to add a very small bit of value to the setup.

They’re a great group of lads so they have all the ingredients so hopefully they have a good summer…

It’s keepers, the group, the management, the whole lot.

Galligan was not the only addition the setup in recent days.

There was further positive news for Galway supporters as Pádraic Joyce also confirmed that 2024 Footballer of the Year Paul Conroy has returned to training after uncertainty earlier in the year about his involvement for 2026.
