A first of its kind survey looking at behaviours towards sports officials is being undertaken by Sport Ireland.
The survey is open to adult spectators, as well as players and coaches, who have had an interaction with officials at games over the past season, which can include both positive and negative scenarios.
“This survey is a key part of Sport Ireland’s plan to address the growing challenges facing officiating, including declining numbers, an ageing workforce and increasing levels of abuse from players and spectators, said Michael McGeehin, Sport Ireland director of coaching.
“Officiating is a valued and vital part of sport – without officials we just wouldn’t be able to play the games we all love so much.

“At Sport Ireland we’re committed to providing officials with the tools, support, and recognition they deserve.”
The survey will be open to players, coaches, or spectators who have encountered a sports official at a competition or game over the past season.
It will include behaviours witnessed or demonstrated and includes both negative and positive situations. Responses to the survey will be anonymous and confidential.
One of the outcomes of the process is to initiate a national respect campaign to address the issues raised through the Sport Ireland Respect the Officials working group.
