Sir, – News from last week’s informal EU leaders’ summit suggests a long-discussed “multi-speed Europe” may finally move from theory to reality. If deeper integration is now open to those member states willing to pursue it, Ireland should not hesitate. We should join.
Brexit demonstrated with brutal clarity the value of allies. Without European solidarity, Ireland’s position would have been immeasurably weaker. That lesson must not be forgotten. Our diplomatic presence in Brussels and across European capitals should be strengthened.
Recent global developments have made it clear that if America, China and Russia get the opportunity, they will tear Europe apart for their own benefit. It will be like a modern-day Scramble for Africa, with the three great powers vying for political, economic and cultural influence in a hopelessly divided and weakened Europe.
Waiting for unanimity is not a strategy. Where obstruction persists, progress must continue among the willing. A Europe that cannot act is a Europe that cannot protect its citizens. European unity is no longer about commerce or culture – it is about survival in a hostile world.
As German chancellor Friedrich Merz declared last week at the Munich Security Conference, the international order is “being destroyed”. We must act now or suffer the consequences. Yours, etc,
