A large-scale roads policing operation is continuing across Waterford this afternoon, with Gardaí focusing on drink and drug driving, mobile phone use, and a range of other road safety offences.

Approximately forty Garda members have been deployed as part of the operation, which sees newly attested officers working alongside experienced colleagues from the Roads Policing Unit.

Divisional Inspector for Roads Policing, Paul Donohoe, told Déise Today that the initiative is designed to make Waterford’s roads safer for all road users.

One of the key priorities of today’s enforcement activity is tackling mobile phone use behind the wheel. Inspector Donohoe stressed that any use of a phone while driving constitutes an offence and remains a significant contributor to collisions.

Speaking about the scale of the operation, Inspector Donohoe said An Garda Síochána “won’t apologise for making the roads safer,” adding that drivers must take responsibility for their behaviour—starting with putting the phone down.

The operation is expected to continue throughout the day, with further checkpoints and enforcement activity planned across the county.
