Aldi shoppers are being urged to check their kitchen cupboards after an urgent recall was issued for a popular budget buy sold in stores nationwide.
The supermarket has pulled a specific batch of one of its low cost health products over fears it could be contaminated with salmonella – a bacteria that can cause severe stomach illness.
The recall, issued yesterday, affects The Foodie Market Milled Chia Seeds in a 200g pack, priced at €1.49. The impacted batch has the barcode 4088600287010 and a best before date of the end of February 2027.
All affected items have been removed from sale and recall notices will be displayed at points of purchase. Customers are being strongly advised not to eat the affected batch. Instead, they can return the product to any Aldi store for a refund.
Health experts say consuming this batch could lead to food poisoning symptoms. The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said: “The above batch of The Foodie Market Milled Chia Seeds is being recalled due to the possible presence of Salmonella. Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in Aldi stores.
“People infected with Salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between six and 72 hours. The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include fever, headache and abdominal cramps.
“The illness usually lasts four to seven days. Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
“Retailers are requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Consumers are advised not to eat the implicated batch.”
