A road in south Dublin has been closed after a section of it subsided following intense rain for the past several weeks.

South Dublin County Council implemented the emergency temporary closure of the Ballinascorney Road (R114) that links Bohernabreena to the Brittas area to facilitate essential emergency works.

A spokesperson for the council said that erosion of the road occurred after heavy and persistant rains leading to a partial collapse of roadside embankment on Monday.

The section of road affected is from Ballymaice Lane to Ballinascorney Road Lower and the closure is due to last until April 1.

While local access has been maintained traffic is being diverted to the N81 between Tallaght and Brittas.

A spokesperson for SDCC said: “The road was attended to by road maintenance crews who installed temporary traffic lights and reduced the road to a single lane as a safety measure.

“A more detailed examination was carried out on Tuesday February 17th which identified further subsidence during the 24 hour period.

“Planned emergency works are now scheduled for Friday 20th February to implement permanent repairs at this location. It is estimated that the works will take 6 weeks.

“To facilitate these essential works Ballianscorney Road will have to be closed from Ballymaice Lane to the Footie. Local access will be facilitated at all times but there will be no through traffic.”
