The term ‘trophy hunting’ is a misnomer. When Cecil the lion was killed with a bow and arrow by Minnesota dentist Walter Palmer in Zimbabwe in 2015, prompting a worldwide wave of anger and disgust, it wasn’t a hunt.

It was a slaughter, carefully arranged by local hunter Theo Bronkhorst so that Palmer was never in any danger.
