American music icons the Foo Fighters are about to play a secret, intimate gig in Kerry – that’s according to eagle-eyed fans online who have spotted a massive clue.

One of the group’s biggest fan accounts on social media shared a picture of a truck outside Paul Geaney’s pub in Dingle and if you look closely you can see suitcases in the back with the band’s logo on it.

As well as the cases likely carrying their gear, the superfan noted that this is the same truck that unloaded their equipment outside the BBC studios when Foo Fighters played on the Graham Norton show yesterday.

Social media immediately started buzzing as superfans from the Kingdom started making their way to Dingle to see if the rumours were true – and if they were, to be one of the lucky few in attendance.

The band has a new single out – Your Favourite Toy, which serves as the title track to their upcoming album which is slated to be released in April.

It might seem random at first, but Kerry actually played a very significant role in the band’s creation more than 30 years ago – so it’s a homecoming of sorts.

Frontman Dave Grohl was travelling around West Cork and the Ring of Kerry shortly after his Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain’s death when he stopped to pick up a hitchhiker.

When the vehicle stopped and he got a glimpse at the man at the side of the road – he saw that he was wearing a t-shirt with Cobain’s face on it and it inspired him to head back home and get to work on new music, leading to the creation of the Foo Fighters.

That story took another twist in 2024 when the ‘mystery hitchhiker’ was identifed as a West Cork Man – and his cousin made a video about the whole story that went viral.

It’s also – in a kind of spooky way – the second major Cork connection to the Nirvana story. In August 1991, Nirvana (then relatively unknown) played the legendary Sir Henry’s venue in Cork city and Kurt Cobain later talked of how he had one of the most spiritual experiences of his life on Leeside, where his ancestors came from.
