Unlike most downsizers, Italian-born Simona Doyle opted to buy a home with a spiral staircase, but then Simona has done a lot of things differently, including taking up three new passions – travel, photography and art

The living room in Simona Doyle’s period home is like the rest of the house – tastefully and stylishly furnished. Everything is subtle so it’s only when Simona herself points out the bases of her two black and white table lamps that it becomes apparent that they each depict the map of the world.
And that’s entirely fitting. Simona, a photographer and artist, has devoted long periods of the last 10 years to travelling the world. More recently she’s concentrated on Africa, specifically the Omo River in Ethiopia. Last year she published a spectacular art book called Marked by the River which records the daily lives, traditions and rituals of five tribes – the Mursi, Karo, Daasanech, Hamar and Aari.
