When Amanda Bone heard that Hugh Wallace had died, she didn’t quite believe it. Even now, months later, she catches herself reaching for the familiar rhythm of him: receiving his phone calls and the quick, outrageous remarks that would have her laughing “in about 10 seconds”.

“He had such an infectious energy,” she says, sitting across from me with a large pot of camomile between us. “I always expected Hugh to just be there forever.”
