Another Donegal family in a defective home has successfully had a downgraded remediation decision overturned following an appeal two years ago.
The family has now been granted Option 1, full demolition and rebuild, which is what their original engineer recommended five years ago.
After their grant option was downgraded by the Housing Agency to a partial remediation, they applied to the independent appeals panel.
Two years later, the family can finally move forward with the full remediation of their home.
“That is an incredibly long time to live with uncertainty. I am truly delighted that the right result has finally come through for their family,” said Councillor Joy Beard of the 100% Redress Party.
Councillor Beard described the decision as a significant and welcome outcome.
“It confirms that the original professional assessment was correct and that this home qualifies for full demolition and rebuild under the scheme,” she said.
“While this decision is welcome, it should never have required such a prolonged and stressful battle. Appeals take a huge emotional and financial toll on families who are already living through enough.”
Cllr Beard has urged anyone else still waiting or fighting an appeal to not lose hope.
“Keep going. You are not alone,” she said.
Approximately 150 homeowners remain in limbo due to ongoing backlogs within the appeals system.
The appeals panel was established in October 2024. By November 2025, just six appeals had been heard, five of which related directly to downgraded remediation decisions. All six appeals were upheld.
