Here’s Division 1 after this weekend’s fixtures, courtsey of GAALeagueTables on X (formerly Twitter).

Malachy Clerkin’s take on today’s all-Ulster affair. Stay tuned for his report later tonight.

‘FT: Donegal 1-20 Armagh 0-19.

There was a burst of late drama as Armagh had a penalty saved in the 67th minute but on the whole, this was a pretty comfortable win for Donegal. Conor O’Donnell’s goal gave them a cushion midway through the second half, a lovely finish after a long, long bout of handpassing around the Armagh arc. Jason McGee was heroic in the second half, pulling down a world of kick-outs and ending the game with four points from play. It means Donegal are top of the league, unbeaten and clearly the best team of the spring so far.’

Jim McGuinness’s side go clear on top of NFL Division 1, with four wins from four.

69 Mins: Oisín Conaty blasts a poor two-point effort well wide, but he had to go for something.

Full-time: Armagh 0-19 Donegal 1-20

68 Mins: Donegal get great pressure on Armagh, but they get a little bit eager and foul O’Neill. The two-point effort goes wide though. Armagh 0-19 Donegal 1-20

67 Mins: Penalty for Armagh! Jarly Óg Burns makes a storming run, which is held up by McGonagle, and the ref adjudges it to be a penalty.

Conaty hits the post! And the follow-up from Conaty is saved off the line by McCole! I think Mulreany gets a touch on the penalty there. Armagh 0-19 Donegal 1-20

66 Mins: Oisín Conaty has a hugely speculative effort on goal. He’s been the main threat of hitting the net for the Orchard County, but no chance from that far out. They come away with a point anyways. Armagh 0-19 Donegal 1-20

64 Mins: Finbarr Roarty does incredibly well to recover and push the ball out of Callum O’Neill’s hand, right as the Armagh man was about to pull the trigger for a point. It’s an amazing piece of defending. Armagh 0-18 Donegal 1-20

62 Mins: Ryan McHugh gets forward again to feed Jason McGee for another point. Armagh 0-18 Donegal 1-20

61 Mins: Oisín Conaty barrels through and nearly gets in for a goal, but his effort fades wide. It’s a free anyways, so we go back to a four-point-game. Armagh 0-18 Donegal 1-19

59 Mins: Gavin Mulreany gets a two-pointer of his own in response, putting six in it again. Armagh race up the pitch, and Ross McQuillan gets a lovely point. Armagh 0-17 Donegal 1-19

57 Mins: A superb two-pointer from McMullen has given Armagh a little bit of life back. Armagh 0-16 Donegal 1-17

54 Mins: Conor O’Donnell shows great pace and drive to single-handedly breach the Armagh defence, before somehow spooning the ball over at close range. Armagh 0-14 Donegal 1-17

52 Mins: A lovely score from Jason McGee, who has been very good today. Up the other end, McMullen blares one wide. Armagh 0-14 Donegal 1-16

50 Mins: Armagh work a lovely score from Crealey and are certainly not out of this one. Armagh 0-14 Donegal 1-15

49 Mins: A big moment passes for Armagh, as Conaty finally escapes the attentions of Roarty, gets in behind, but is stopped one-on-one with Gavin Mulreany. Armagh 0-13 Donegal 1-15

48 Mins: Armagh finally respond to the Donegal onslaught, with Conor Turbitt scoring. Then they win the kickout and Ross McQuillan pops one over. Armagh 0-13 Donegal 1-15

46 Mins: Conor McCahill shakes off his man and fists one over. Donegal have renewed energy after that goal. Armagh 0-11 Donegal 1-15

44 Mins: Goal for Donegal! Conor O’Donnell blasts it beyond Blaine Hughes after a stretch of possession lasting over two minutes, where Donegal probed and prodded until the gap was made. Armagh 0-11 Donegal 1-14

41 Mins: Cian McConville gets a chance for a goal after a poor kickout, and blasts it just over the bar. Armagh 0-11 Donegal 0-14

39 Mins: Oisin O’Neill misses a two-point opportunity. Then Donegal race down the other end, where Peadar Mogan breaks through and lays it off for Gallen to put it just over the bar. Armagh 0-10 Donegal 0-14

36 Mins: The first two Armagh efforts of the half drop short, and are gathered well by Mulreany, but they fight really well to get it back, and O’Neill sticks it over brilliantly. Armagh 0-10 Donegal 0-13

Despite the better weather late this afternoon, the groundsmen still had some job getting the putch back in shape.

Highlights of a good opening half in the Athletic Grounds.

Malachy Clerkin has some reaction at half-time of Armagh vs Donegal:

‘Half-time update: Donegal lead Armagh by 0-13 to 0-9. Armagh probably the happier – they were facing a strong enough wind in the first half and used the ball far more efficiently. Donegal have scored three two-pointers but missed with another five. The sun has come out after the downpours and thunderstorms of earlier. Entertaining game.’

NFL Division 2: 66 Mins: Cavan 0-14 Kildare 0-11

Half-time: Armagh 0-9 Donegal 0-13

34 Mins: A Donegal two-point effort goes wide and short, but McHugh is on hand to gather it, and Conor O’Donnell sends it over for a point. Armagh 0-9 Donegal 0-13

33 Mins: There’s a chance for Donegal to go for goal, but having been burned by the last chance, McGee decides to take the point instead. Then up the other end, Ross McQuillan uses a little bit of soccer skill to get away from his man, and then gets a lovely score from out wide. Armagh 0-9 Donegal 0-12

31 Mins: Oisin Conaty tries to lay the ball off, but it doesn’t quite come off. Somehow, he emerges out of the scrap for the ball with clean possession and is fouled. O’Neill sticks the free, getting Armagh back on track. Armagh 0-8 Donegal 0-111

28 Mins: A good bit of rucking and shoving about there after a tight call by the referee, but not much of note. Gavin Mulreany sticks over the two-point free after. Armagh 0-7 Donegal 0-11

NFL Division 2: 57 Mins: Cavan 0- 13 Kildare 0-9

24 Mins: Ryan McHugh breaks through the centre and has a low shot at goal from 20 yards, which goes just wide. Looked like McQuillan got a touch to it, but a wide is given. Armagh 0-7 Donegal 0-9

23 Mins: Conor McCahill gets a brilliant score, sending his man almost into the stands with a dummy solo, and then hooking it over off his right boot. Armagh 0-7 Donegal 0-9

21 Mins: Oisin O’Neill kicks an inspirational score on the loop, but he just drifted inside the arc, so only one point. At the other end, his opposite number, Jason McGee, pops a score over from well iside the arc. Armagh 0-7 Donegal 0-8

NFL Division 2: 47 Mins, Cavan 0-9 Kildare 0-9

16 Mins: Cian McConville dictates things for a moment, then slips Oisin O’Neill into space, and the full-forward adds a point. Armagh 0-6 Donegal 0-7

14 Mins: Ross McQUillan is cleared out of it by Caolán McGonagle, stopping the game. Darragh McMullen had fisted one over just before, and then Blaine Hughes’s free effort from the McQuillan foul drops for McConville, who scores. Armagh 0-5 Donegal 0-7

11 Mins: Ryan McHugh gets a handy one for Donegal. At the other end Oisín Conaty rounds Finbarr Roarty and strikes a great score. But then it’s back up and Langan pops a two-pointer over casually. Armagh 0-3 Donegal 0-7

8 Mins: Jarly Óg Burns gets in space up the middle again and pops it over on his left. Then Eoghan Bán Gallagher responds really well with a point for Donegal. Armagh 0-2 Donegal 0-4

NFL Division 2, half-time: Cavan 0-5 Kildare 0-5

5 Mins: Oisin Gallen pops over a lovely score over for Donegal. Then Jarly Óg Burns makes a great run through the middle, is dragged down, and Oisín O’Neill gets the first score for Armagh from a free. Armagh 0-1 Donegal 0-3

NFL Division 2, full-time: Louth 1-15 Tyrone 0-13

Here’s the Armagh team to face Donegal, with some late changes made.

And the visitor’s XV features one change, with the impressive teenager Conor McCahill in the starting lineup.

And here’s the thoughts of Seán Moran after a great game in Nowlan Park:

‘A cracker of a league match ended with Kilkenny recovering a deficit in injury-time to win by a point after John Donnelly was fouled in the 75th minute. Cian Kenny converted to leave the home side a point ahead, 1-21 to 1-20, and the local support in UPMC Nowlan Park well satisfied.

Waterford will be frustrated that having levelled at 1-13 apiece in the 41st minute – the goal made by Stephen Bennett’s driving run and a great, tight-angle finish by Seán Walsh – they failed to build on the momentum, leaving themselves open to the inevitable Kilkenny comeback.

Despite facing the wind after half-time, the visitors had much more joy in going long into the full forwards than they had enjoyed in the first half and it made for an absorbing contest.

When Bennett’s injury-time free from distance fell short and Kilkenny won a free out, they got the ball to Martin Keoghan and he levelled, setting the stage for the decisive late intervention.’

Here are the highlights of the Kilkenny-Waterford clash this afternoon.

NFL Division 2 update:

Full-time: Cork 1-23 Meath 1-21

68 Mins: Louth 1-14 Tyrone 0-13

26 Mins: Cavan 0-4 Kildare 0-4

Full-time, NHL Division 1A: Offaly 0-18 Galway 2-23

Malachy Clerkin is at the Athletic Grounds for the Division 1 meeting of Armagh and Donegal, which starts in just over 10 minutes:

‘Another abysmal day weather-wise in the Athletic Grounds, where thunder and lightning have been the main sounds heard as the sodden crowd file in for Armagh v Donegal. All-Ireland captain Aidan Forker has been added to the Armagh panel but there’s no sign of Michael Murphy in the Donegal 26. The home side could really do with a win here to avoid getting dragged into a relegation scrap. As for Donegal, they’re defending the only unbeaten record in Division One. Throw-in is at 3.45.’

NFL Division 2 update:

57 Mins: Cork 1-22 Meath 1-19, 60 Mins: Louth 1-12 Tyrone 0-12, 22 Mins: Cavan 0-3 Kildare 0-3

Full-time: Monaghan 2-11 Mayo 2-30

Full-time: Kilkenny 1-21 Waterford 1-20

NHL Division 1A update: Offaly 0-14 Galway 1-19

74 Mins: Mossy Keoghan levels it for Kilkenny! There’s killings going on in the last few minutes here, lads crashing into each other left and right. Only a minute left. Kilkenny 1-20 Waterford 1-20

72 Mins: Eoin Murphy is down getting treatmnent and Benett has a good chance from a free to widen the gap again. It’s a tough free, and it drops short. Kilkenny 1-19 Waterford 1-20

Monaghan get a goal back, but the game is a dead duck at this stage. The only thing raising the crowd now is the debutant, McDonald, who has a score of each kind now, after a lovely two-point effort.

62 Mins: Monaghan 2-11 Mayo 2-27

69 Mins: Stephen Bennett puts two between the sides, but Eoin Cody responds from a free. There will be five minutes added time. Kilkenny 1-19 Waterford 1-20

NFL Division 2 update:

51 Mins: Cork 1-19 Meath 1-14, 48 Mins: Louth 1-10 Tyrone 0-11

66 Mins: Sean Mackey and Dessie Hutchinson link up well to level matters. Then Sean Walsh puts the Déise back in front. Kilkenny 1-18 Waterford 1-19

Kobe McDonald gets a first score in league football.

And now a first goal! He races into a tonne of space and buries one into the bottom corner off the outside of his boot! 56 Mins: Monaghan 1-11 Mayo 1-25

63 Mins: Richie Reid makes his way on for Kilkenny, with his side a point ahead. Kilkenny 1-18 Waterford 1-17

58 Mins: Darragh Corcoran gets a massive score from his own half to put Kilkenny back in front. Kilkenny 1-17 Waterford 1-16

A huge roar from the Mayo faithful in Clones as Kobe McDonald enters the fray. 53 Mins: Monaghan 1-9 Mayo 1-22

51 Mins: Off the bench, Ed McDermott get a great score to put the Cats in front. Kilkenny 1-15 Waterford 1-14

McCarron already has 1-2 off the bench after another point. 45 Mins: Monaghan 1-8 Mayo 0-19

48 Mins: Mossy Keoghan gets a superb point to put Kilkenny level. Kilkenny 1-14 Waterford 1-14

Goal for Monaghan! Jack McCarron bundles the ball beyond Hennelly to get the hosts back in the game. 44 Mins: Monaghan 1-7 Mayo 0-19

Jack McCarron taps over Monaghan’s first score of the second half from a free. 43 Mins: Monaghan 0-7 Mayo 0-18

43 Mins: Waterford take the lead for the first time today! Kilkenny 1-13 Waterford 1-14

Darragh Beirne chips over the first score of the second half on his left foot. 40 Mins: Monaghan 0-6 Mayo 0-18

41 Mins: Goal for Waterford! Sean Walsh finds the net at close-range after a mazy run and a hand pass from Stephen Bennett sent him through. Kilkenny 1-13 Waterford 1-13

Seán Moran’s impressions of the first half of Kilkenny-Waterford:

‘After a nondescript 25 minutes’ hurling, the Division 1A encounter between Kilkenny and Waterford burst into a contest at UPMC Nowlan Park. A five-point scoring volley from the visitors threw the match back into the balance after an eighth-minute goal by Martin Keoghan had left Kilkenny in control despite playing against a strong breeze.

That advantage will be with them in the second half and Waterford will have to produce more of the same shooting to keep up – which will be complicated by the elements, as most of their scores came from distance in the first half. Crowd 7,466′

38 Mins: Back underway in Nowlan Park, and Kilkenny get the first score. Then Eoin Cody seems to be dragged down, but the ref thinks he’s looking for the free, and awards it the other way. Cody can’t believe it, but he has his defenders and goalkeeper to thank for stopping Waterford from bringing it back to a point after. Kilkenny 1-12 Waterford 0-13

NHL Division 1A, half-time: Offaly 0-6 Galway 0-9

NFL Division 2 update:

35 Mins: Louth 1-7 Tyrone 0-7, Cork 1-15 Meath 0-11

NHL Div 1A, Half-time: Kilkenny 1-11 Waterford 0-13

Andrew Woods breaks the line and then chips over a lovely score as the weather worsens in Clones. 32 Mins: Monaghan 0-6 Mayo 0-13

33 Mins: Another couple of scores on the bounce from Waterford. Reuben Halloran, their form player of the league, fires one over, and then sub Seán Mackey goes on a mazy run, flicks it up off the stick and fires it over. Kilkenny 1-10 Waterford 0-12

NHL Division 2 update: 15 Mins: Cork 0-7 Meath 0-5, 15 Mins: Louth 1-3 Tyrone 0-2

9 Mins: Cork 0-4 Meath 0-2, 9 Mins: Louth 1-1 Tyrone 0-2

22 Mins: Mikey Butler gets a super point from out wide, especially for a corner-back. Then Darragh Corcoran is a bit lucky not to see red for a shoulder to the head on Waterford’s Shane Bennett. Kilkenny 1-6 Waterford 0-3

18 Mins: Micheál Bannigan is leading the charge for Monaghan, keeping them in touch with another point. Then Hennelly comes up from the goal for a two-point-free for the vistors, and pops it wide. Monaghan 0-4 Mayo 0-8

19 Mins: The Waterford forwards have been too wasteful so far. They did really well to recycle it back to Walsh but he struck wide on the turn. Then Kilkenny go up the other end and makes them pay. Kilkenny 1-5 Waterford 0-3

All the 2pm throw-ins are underway now. Meath grab an early lead over Cork in Division 2 football. 2 Mins: Cork 0-0 Meath 0-1

3 Mins: David Blanchfield opens the scoring for the Cats. A slow start overall. Kilkenny 0-1 Waterford 0-0

Monaghan’s Micheál Bannigan gets the opening point of the game. 2 Mins: Monaghan 0-1 Mayo 0-0

Seán Moran is at Nowlan Park:

‘A mercifully dry afternoon in UPMC Nowlan Park is the scene for this potentially crucial relegation match between Kilkenny and Waterford, who have the current advantage of having beaten Limerick – so the head-to-head could be very important.

Pre-match changes see multiple All Star Eoin Murphy return to the side in goal in place of Aidan Tallis, who has played there for the opening matches of the league.Waterford bring in Mikey Kiely to start instead of Peter Hogan, most of whose All-Ireland winning club mates are also back for this. A good crowd is already in place and Sean Stack will referee.’

Half-time: Antrim 0-10 Carlow 0-9

Eoin Murphy starts in place of Aidan Tallis for Kilkenny.

And in football’s Division 1, Mayo start as selected earlier in the week for their clash in Clones.

Monaghan change Thomas Hughes in for Karl Gallagher, Ryan Mohan in for Fionan Carolan and Kian Mulligan starts in goal for Beggan.

Kilkenny’s lineup named to start for their game against Waterford. We’ll be back with the late changes if there’s any.

And here’s Waterford’s XV.

Antrim are really starting to play some good stuff now, with the passing coming off better than Carlow’s long ball tactics. 28 Mins: Antrim 0-9 Carlow 0-5

A couple of early frees for both sides where the ref adjudges players to have thrown the sliotar, rather than hand passed. Seems to be a bit of a crackdown so far in the leagues. 21 Mins: Antrim 0-6 Carlow 0-4

With five minutes on the clock it’s the hosts who have the lead at Corrigan Park. 5 Mins: Antrim 0-2 Carlow 0-1

The first throw-ins of the day are nearly ready to get underway, with Sligo-Limerick and Wicklow-London in NFL Division 3 and 4, and Antrim playing host to Carlow in Division 1B hurling.

In the major hurling tie of the day, Kilkenny play host to Waterford, with the Déise coming off back-to-back wins over Limerick and Offaly. Nowlan Park is in fine shape despite the conditions over the week.

Meanwhile, in hurling’s Division 1A, Cork are sitting at the top of the pile by two points. Galway and Offaly will both be looking to pick up their first points of the season (2.00pm), while Kilkenny and Waterford both have a chance to climb nearer the top (1.45pm)

A reminder of the state of play across all four divisions of the National Football Leagues, courtsey of GAALeagueTables on X (formerly Twitter). Donegal need to pick up points to regain dominance atop Division 1, with Roscommon level after their win over Galway last night.

The GAA’s planned integration of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and Camogie Association in 2027 was described as ‘unrealistic’ late last year. In a low-stakes edition of, perhaps, the most classic football rivalry, Kerry ran out clear winners over a lacklustre Dublin side last night. Gordon Manning reports on a humdrum affair in Croke Park.

As GAA Congress meets next weekend, one of the areas under scrutiny will be the cost of intercounty backroom teams. With costs now rising into the millions in several counties, Jarlath Burns has previously promised to tackle the issue in his role as president. Gordon Manning reports on the ins-and-outs of the situation.

GAA Congress gets its chance to halt the runaway train of intercounty costs

Each team, intercounty and club alike, are drawing up plans for the best way to handle the end of games. There are three score values now, and each one offers a different set of equations to factor in. The numbers behind what would’ve been called the percentage play two years ago may no longer add up, writes Ciarán Murphy.
