Andy Moran was full of praise for Kobe McDonald as he scored 1-04 on his senior debut for Mayo in Sunday’s league win over Monaghan.
McDonald is set to head away to Australia to join St Kilda at some point this season, with the AFL outfit saying he’s due “once he completes his final year of school in mid-2026.”
But followers of the Green and Red will hope to stretch the interpretation of “mid” into late July based on the evidence of his cameo appearance off the bench in Clones.
His goal was superbly taken as he galloped in from the right, finishing low and left, across Kian Mulligan, from a distance.
The win keeps Andy Moran’s outfit in the hunt for a place in a fourth Division 1 final in five seasons.
And the Mayo manager spoke glowingly of the maturity and eagerness of the teenager on RTÉ’s Sunday Sport.
“Kobe lost a ‘Connacht C’ final for Gortnor Abbey last week and he came straight in on Wednesday,” said Moran (below).
“He wanted to play, he wanted to be part of the squad, trained Friday and came up with us last night. He wanted to play, he wasn’t here to make up the numbers.

“The guys will tell you – the locals – that he’s been doing this for a couple of years now in Mayo. But it’s a big step up today and you’re saying I was a marksman, I never did anything like that at 18 years of age.
“There’s a big difference and he’s honestly just a great fella. He wants to learn and he wants to be part of the team, so it’s no surprise to us that he’d come out and perform like that.”
While it’s not clear exactly when McDonald will make the move Down Under, Moran maintains that there’s every chance he will be with Mayo for the whole of the summer.
“Oh yeah, I think Crossmolina are hoping to have him in September, hopefully for the summer,” he said when asked if the starlet would be hanging around.
“He’ll probably head off then.”
‘It was a phenomenal impact. He’s obviously such a talent. He’s the type of superstar that Mayo really need’

On the performance of his troops, more generally, Moran was happy to see a reaction after a flat performance against Donegal in the previous game.
“We were very disappointed last week if I’m being honest,” the 42-year-old admitted.
“For the last 50 minutes of that game we were actually alright, but for the first 25 it just wasn’t anywhere near where we wanted it to be.
“The boys trained really well Wednesday, trained really well Friday, came up yesterday in great attitude.
“That was a really, really good display. A lot of things to work on, but that was a really good display.”
