An investigation is under way following the death of a man in his 50s while in garda custody in Co Waterford.

The man was discovered unresponsive in a cell in the early hours of Saturday morning and urgent assistance was requested.

Gardaí said that despite immediate resuscitative attempts by the gardaí on duty at the time and by medical personnel and first responders, the man was pronounced dead.

The local coroner has been notified and the matter has now been reported to the Office of the Police Ombudsman, Fiosrú.

Gardaí said that as the matter is now being investigated by Fiosrú, they are not in a position to comment further.
