Mayo’s emphatic 2-30 to 2-11 victory over Monaghan in Clones will be remembered for a dominant second-half display, but the loudest cheers of the afternoon were reserved for one moment in particular.

Eighteen-year-old Kobe McDonald made his first senior competitive appearance for Mayo and wasted little time showing why excitement has been building around him.

Introduced from the bench to a huge reception from the travelling support, the Crossmolina youngster produced a sensational cameo, finishing with 1-4 from play as Mayo pulled away after the break.

His standout moment arrived when fellow clubman Jordan Flynn slipped him through on goal. McDonald raced through and showed composure beyond his years, burying a low finish into the bottom left corner to spark celebrations among the Mayo crowd.

The scores kept coming for Kobe McDonald. He added a superb two-pointer from distance along with two well-taken points as Mayo surged clear in a one-sided second half performance.

The appearance marked a significant milestone for the teenager, who is set to link up with AFL side St Kilda later this year after completing his Leaving Certificate exams in June.

Inevitably, comparisons will follow. Kobe McDonald is the son of Mayo legend Ciarán McDonald, one of the county’s most iconic forwards, but Sunday felt less like a reminder of the past and more like a glimpse of the future.

As Mayo ran riot in Clones, a new name announced itself on the intercounty stage, and judging by the reaction from the stands, supporters know they may only get a brief look before Australia calls for the young man from Crossmolina Deel Rovers.
