For decades, viewers assumed that Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders all existed in hermetically-sealed parallel worlds.
Each was set in a place that was recognisably England, but clearly not the same England as the others. Thus, no matter how many Coronation Street characters left the cobbles to go down to “that London”, none of them ever popped into the Queen Vic for a lunchtime pint.
