These days, Christina Applegate is used to talking about the worst parts of life. The actress, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2021, is releasing a memoir called You With the Sad Eyes on March 3. “My life isn’t wrapped up with a bow,” Applegate tells People in a new interview. “People’s lives, sorry for lack of a better term, fucking suck sometimes. So I’m being as honest and raw as I possibly can.” Applegate grew up with “single moms, men coming in and out, drugs,” before becoming a star as a teenager on Married… with Children. As an adult, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and then MS, all of which she writes about in the memoir. “We all have come from somewhere, some places more painful than others, and it’s what you do with it, I guess,” she says. “This is not an inspirational book, by any means. But it can inspire.”
Now, after saying she will likely not work on-camera again, Applegate has to set direct goals for herself, and basic routines are hard. Every morning, she forces herself to get out of bed and take her daughter to school, even though it leaves her in physical pain. “I want to take her; it’s my favorite thing to do. It’s the only time we have together by ourselves,” Applegate says. “I tell myself, ‘Just get her there safely and get home so you can get back into bed.’ And that’s what I do.” It may suck, but she does it.
