Speaking to TIME in 2025, Taylor Jenkins Reid expressed her desire to adapt the movie to reflect the #MeToo movement, which erupted after the book’s publication. “There was no Harvey Weinstein conversation when I finished that book. We have a real opportunity here to further that conversation, and to make the movie better than the book,” she said at the time.
