Dublin and Ireland could be set for a dramatic 13C temperature swing as Met Eireann have forecast hail showers – amid more flood warnings from weather boffins.
Storm Dave fears were eased yesterday after some brief panic stations over nasty winds hitting the country on Thursday night and Friday. However, significant rain is still being forecast for those days – with a risk of yet more localised flooding taking place.
However, Dublin looks set to miss the worst of the conditions, with the south and southwest of the country those on high alert. Weather Alerts Ireland warned: “The latest ECMWF has eased the winds that were forecast but we can expect a bunch of rain.
“The south of the country is forecast to see the heaviest of rain with over 30mm possible. It will still be fairly windy but not as bad as what was forecast.
“By the end of the weekend we are forecast to see around 60mm in the south and around 100mm of rain in the south west on higher ground. Risk of flooding once again.”
Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather shared similar warnings, saying: “A damp but mild Wednesday morning with rain in the east, but it will clear to a mix of sunny spells and showers. Heavy rain again tomorrow Thursday, with heavy rain moving into the west in the morning and moving east across the country, but easing as it does.
“However, more heavy rain will move up from the south Thursday evening, with over 20mm possible in total in the southern half of the country. Sunny spells developing Friday with showers, but a risk of more heavy rain Saturday night into Sunday, especially in the southwest where over 100mm could fall between now and Sunday night.”
And Met Eireann have said there is a chance of hailstones amid the showers on Friday. In Dublin this morning it is dull and damp, but things are set to brighten up as the day goes on.
Temperatures should get up to highs of 14C. Tonight will be mostly cloudy with some scattered showers, and lowest temperatures of 8C.
And here is what the rest of the Met Eireann forecast says for the rest of the week:
Overview: Mostly unsettled with rain and showers spreading from the Atlantic. A brief colder spell on Friday night and Saturday but otherwise temperatures will be close to or slightly above normal.
Thursday: Tomorrow morning will be cloudy but dry at first. Rain will spread from the west through the afternoon with freshening southerly winds. The rain will become patchier for a time in the evening. Highest temperatures of 10 to 11 degrees.
Thursday night: Outbreaks of rain will spread across the country early in the night, heavy at times. Rain will clear eastwards to isolated showers and clear spells later. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees in a light westerly breeze.
Friday: A bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers, some heavy with a chance of hail. Highest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees with moderate to fresh southwest winds veering northwesterly during the afternoon.
Friday night: A dry, cold and largely clear night, though cloud will increase in the west and southwest towards morning. Widespread frost and some icy patches will develop with lowest temperatures of -2 to +1 degrees in a light westerly or variable breeze.
Saturday: Cloud will thicken from the west through the morning with rain and drizzle spreading eastwards across the country through the day. Light southerly winds will increase moderate to fresh as the rain spreads. A cold start but becoming milder later with highest afternoon temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees.
Sunday: A rather wet and windy start to meteorological spring with outbreaks of rain turning heavy in places, along with fresh to strong and gusty southerly winds. A milder day with highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees.
Further outlook: Remaining unsettled on Monday with further rain. There is potential for drier spells on Tuesday and Wednesday.
