A Waterford councillor has renewed his call for the immediate establishment of a retail taskforce following a series of high-profile shop closures in the city and Dungarvan.

Independent councillor Joe O’Riordan raised the issue at the February plenary meeting of Waterford City and County Council. He urged the local authority to act quickly to support struggling retailers.

Urgent Action Sought

Cllr O’Riordan said recent business closures highlight the growing challenges facing the retail sector. He asked the council to organise a conference and create a dedicated taskforce to engage directly with affected businesses.

He said the council must examine practical ways to assist retailers during what he described as a difficult trading environment.

The councillor added that even low-cost or administrative supports could make a difference if the council acts proactively.

Plans Underway

In response, Acting Director of Services Claire Hartley confirmed that the council is already working to establish a retail taskforce.

She said the local authority plans to meet retailers in both Waterford city and Dungarvan during the first quarter of 2026.

Those meetings will focus on identifying challenges, promoting the range of retail offerings in Waterford, and outlining available supports.

Hartley also said the council intends to introduce additional supports for retailers later this year.

Closures Raise Concern

The discussion comes amid continued retail closures locally. Jewellery chain Claire’s recently announced it will close its Waterford store after 25 years in the city.

Several other businesses have shut their doors in recent weeks, raising concern about footfall, rising costs and changing consumer habits.

Cllr O’Riordan said coordinated action now could help protect local jobs and strengthen the retail sector in both the city and Dungarvan.
