New research shows that people in Cork attend more services than the national average.

A major study marking 20 years of the RIP.ie website revealed a striking regional divide in how Irish people say their final goodbyes.

Figures show that Cork residents attend at least five funerals a year on average. However, Kerry and Limerick top the list as Ireland’s “funeral capitals,” attending more than six services annually. Dubliners, by contrast, attend around three.

The research also highlights changing traditions around funerals. Only 20% of respondents believe wearing black is essential, while 90% feel that every family should have the right to deliver a eulogy.

To mark the 20th anniversary, RIP.ie is hosting the RIP.ie Remembers Walk throughout March, encouraging people across Cork to walk 20 kilometres in memory of a loved one.
