The Ballad of Johnny & June is coming to Dublin, with the Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash musical set to run at the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre from 31 March to 11 April 2026.

The production is billed as a new show created with the support of the Cash family, and it tells the story of the couple’s relationship through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash.

Speaking about the genre’s enduring pull, Carter Cash told RTÉ’s Arts and Media Correspondent Evelyn O’Rourke that country music “tells the truth in four chords in a song”, adding: “I think it touches deeply because it tells the story of simple life. Country goes straight to the point of the heart… it tells the story of life.”

Reflecting on what it means to protect that legacy, he also spoke about being brought on stage as a child and travelling with his parents, before later working alongside them in the studio.

He said the songs and heritage now have “a life of its own”, but that it matters to him that it is “properly respected” and “never used… to exploit”, and that it remains positive and true to how his parents would have wanted their lives represented.

The production stars Christopher Ryan Grant as Johnny Cash and Christina Bianco as June Carter Cash. Tickets are on sale now, with prices listed from €29.80.
