The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) has issued an urgent warning about bags sold in Ireland.

The warning comes after safety inspections discovered a chemical associated with cancer. The items contain elevated levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) related compounds.

PFOAs are thought to be carcinogenic and present a danger to the environment. Multiple JAKO sports bags, personal bags, and rucksacks are subject to the recall.

The CCPC confirmed that more than 200 of the bags were purchased in Ireland.

A CCPC notice said: “If you purchased one of these products, please stop use immediately. Customers can identify an affected product by the bag’s Model Number/Item Number. Affected products can be returned to JAKO with a free return label to receive a replacement item of at least equal value, or a refund of the purchase price via the original payment method.”

JAKO has also alerted customers to the recall, saying: “The safety of our products is our top priority. As part of our ongoing quality and safety checks, we have determined that the bags, backpacks, and toiletries bags from the Teamline CHALLENGE range do not meet our high safety standards. For this reason, we are issuing a product recall.”

“Internal inspections have revealed that the bags in question do not fully comply with our quality and safety standards. We have decided to issue this recall in order to rule out any potential risks.

“The recall is being carried out as a precautionary measure, as a substance that is not permitted under EU regulations has been found in the bags, backpacks, and toiletries bags in the Challenge product line. The safety of our products and the satisfaction of our customers are our top priorities.

“The returned products will be inspected and disposed of properly.”
