Met Eireann have issued a status yellow weather warning for three counties as a “wet and windy” Sunday awaits for Ireland.

Galway, Mayo and Kerry can expect spells of heavy rain leading to localised flooding, poor visibility and hazardous travelling conditions. The warning is active for all 24 hours of Sunday – kicking in at 12am, and ending at 12am Monday.

And one weather boffin has said that “Sunday is looking very wet and windy” for the country. Weather Alerts Ireland said: “Over 50mm in 24 hours for the south west on higher ground, lower ground expected to see in excess of 30mm.

“It will be windy also with gusts exceeding 100km/h in coastal areas while inland will see gusts exceeding 80km/h.” Today has started off sunny in Dublin, but showery outbreaks of rain are set to roll in across the afternoon.

Temperatures will get up to around 9C. Tonight will be wet, breezy, and misty, with lows of 2C.

And here is what Met Eireann’s forecast says for Sunday, and the start of next week:

Outlook: Becoming much more settled into the new week with dry weather and spring sunshine most days. Cold by night though with some frost and ice.

Sunday: Sunday will begin dull and breezy with outbreaks of rain and drizzle. Becoming windier through the day with heavier spells of rain occurring too. Highest temperatures of 10 or 11 degrees with strong and gusty southerly winds developing with possible gales near coasts later.

Sunday night: Wet and rather windy weather will clear eastwards overnight with longer drier spells developing across the western half of the country. Lowest temperatures of 2 to 6 degrees with moderating southerly winds.

Monday: Starting out largely dry with good sunny spells. However, it will become cloudier and breezier with some showery outbreaks of rain pushing in from the Atlantic, though much of the Southeast will stay dry. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees with freshening southwest winds. Generally dry for the evening as winds veer northwest and ease.

Monday night: Dry, cold and clear with frost and icy patches. Lowest temperatures of -2 to +2 degrees in light westerly breezes.

Tuesday: Any early frost or ice will soon clear, leaving a dry and sunny day. Highest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southerly winds.

Tuesday night: Dry with long clear spells. Some frost or ice in places. Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees in a moderate southerly wind.

Wednesday: Dry with spells of sunshine, though breezy. Highest temperatures of 10 to 13 degrees in a moderate to fresh southerly wind.

Wednesday night: Staying dry with clear spells. Lowest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees in a light to moderate southeast breeze.
