When he was just a baby, Sen was stolen from his home in the wild. He was taken to live on a bile farm in Vietnam, where he spent 27 years locked away in a tiny cage. Bile farming recently became illegal in Vietnam, finally punching Sen’s ticket to freedom.

Animals Asia convinced Sen’s owners to surrender him into their care and made plans to transport him to their sanctuary. Finally, Sen had room to run, friends to play with — and the ability to see the sky for the first time in almost three decades.

When sweet Sen saw the sky, he couldn’t stop staring. His rescuers laughed for joy as they watched Sen looking up over and over again. He couldn’t believe his eyes, and everyone was just so happy for him.
Bear bile is used in traditional medicine practices, and even though it’s now illegal, over 150 moon bears are still waiting to be freed. Animals Asia is working to rescue as many as they can, giving them the opportunity to start over and enjoy life again.
Now that Sen is no longer trapped in his tiny cage, he’s learning how to just be a bear again. He spends a lot of time exploring his surroundings and relaxing, enjoying things wild bears take for granted, like grass, water and sun.

Watching Sen stare up at the sky is a beautiful reminder to his rescuers of why they do this work. There are still so many moon bears to rescue, and they won’t stop until all of them have been given a happy ending just like Sen.
