Garmin has announced a major software update for a number of its smartwatches, including the Venu X1, vívoactive 6, fēnix 8 Pro, Forerunner 570 and Forerunner 970, as well as the Garmin Connect app.
The update adds advanced equipment tracking. Users can record what equipment they use during their workouts, including running shoes, skis, bicycle components, or wheelchairs. The app now includes notes, photos, grouping of equipment into collections and a model database to simplify the selection process. The system can also automatically link specific equipment to certain types of activity and show a wear indicator on the watch.
New features for the watch include a route planner for preparing for competitions. It allows you to create a course with checkpoints, time limits, aid stations and rest plans, after which the route can be viewed on a compatible device.
It also adds the display of sports results. Users can follow their favourite teams in 15 leagues, get real-time match scores, schedules and standings on the watch when connected to a smartphone.
In the field of fitness, it is now possible to record mixed workouts that include several activities in one session. The new Garmin Fitness Coach generates personalised training plans based on fitness level, activity history and other user data. Plans can include cardio of varying intensity, strength training and more than 25 types of activities.
For cyclists, voice alerts from Varia radars have been added to the watch to warn of approaching vehicles.
The update also expands the health features. There is now a circadian rhythm indicator that helps maintain a stable sleep pattern, as well as the ability to record caffeine and alcohol consumption directly from the watch with subsequent analysis of the impact on sleep, stress and heart activity.
Other changes include features for truck drivers to help manage schedules, training during breaks and health indicators on the road. New accessibility features have also been added, including voice announcements of time and health data, hourly reminders, and display modes for people with different forms of colour blindness.
The update is free of charge and has already begun to arrive on compatible devices. It can be installed via automatic updates on the watch, synchronisation with Garmin Connect, or using the Garmin Express app.
