A man has lost his life following a road traffic collision in Co Kildare.

Gardai and emergency services were called to the scene following reports that a pedestrian had been struck by a lorry on the westbound carriageway of the M4 near Kilcock shortly before 7am on Sunday morning.

The pedestrian, a man aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Coroner has been notified and post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

The westbound carriageway of the M4 between J7 Maynooth and J8 Kilcock remains closed this afternoon to allow Garda Forensic Collision Investigators carry out a technical examination of the scene.

Traffic diversions are currently in place and motorists are urged to avoid the area if possible.

An investigation into the fatal collision is underway and gardai are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “Shortly after 6:50am, Gardaí and emergency services were alerted after a lorry struck a pedestrian on the westbound carriageway of the M4 near Kilcock. The pedestrian a male in his 60s was pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The Coroner has been notified and post-mortem examination will be conducted in due course.

“The westbound carriageway of the M4 between J7 Maynooth and J8 Kilcock remains closed to facilitate a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, with traffic diversions currently in place.

“Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward. Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) from the M4 in the vicinity of Junction 8 Kilcock at the time are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Leixlip Garda Station 01 6667800 the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

“The garda spokesperson added that investigations are ongoing.”

The incident occurred just hours after two young men were killed after the car in which they were travelling left the road and crashed into a flooded ditch in Co Mayo.

The collision occurred shortly after 4.15am on the L5140 at Laghtadawannagh, near Ballina.

Two occupants of the car, both adult men in their late teens, were pronounced dead at the scene, while three other occupants, two men in their mid-teens and a woman in her late teens, were taken by ambulance to Mayo University Hospital.
