TRYON— On Friday, the Tryon community gathered on Depot Street to celebrate the unveiling of “The Steel Deer,” a new rebar sculpture created by the Breakfast Crew, a group of local volunteers, during a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. This event was a collaboration between the Tryon Arts & Crafts School and the Tryon Downtown Development Association to bring more public art to the town.

Denny Crowe, a member of the TDDA, expressed her enthusiasm about the sculpture’s impact on the community.

“This is not just a sculpture; it’s a symbol of our creativity and commitment to the arts,” she said. “The Steel Deer will become a landmark in our town, celebrating the extraordinary talents of our local artists and the generous spirit of the Breakfast Crew.”

The Breakfast Crew, comprised of talented individuals Dave Briere, Vern Davis, Gerry Drew, Bernard Edwards, Nick Fischer, Fred Herres, and Will Kallberg, worked collectively to bring this project to fruition. Will Barclift, executive director of TACS, shared his gratitude during the ceremony.

“The Breakfast Crew has been a steadfast force in our community,” Barclift said. “Their passion for art and commitment to Tryon have played a vital role in enhancing our local culture. We are deeply grateful for their contributions.”

Community members gathered on Depot Street to celebrate the unveiling of “The Steel Deer” on Saturday.

Fred Herres, speaking on behalf of the Breakfast Crew, reflected on the group’s journey: “We started as friends coming together over breakfast, frustrated with the lack of public art in our town. This project turned into a labor of love, a way for us to give back to a community we care about deeply.”

Barclift further elaborated on the importance of community involvement. “It’s wonderful to see so many people come together to support our local artists. Events like this remind us of the strength of our community,” he said. “When we collaborate, we can accomplish remarkable things. This sculpture isn’t just about art; it’s about inspiring future generations to appreciate and participate in creative expression.”

The sculpture is not only a visual delight but is also available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting TACS. The unique arrangement ensures that “The Steel Deer” remains on public display in its current location for at least five years, serving as a constant reminder of the community’s support for the arts.

“I hope this sculpture will spark conversations and inspire creativity in everyone who sees it. Art has the power to unite us, to tell our stories, and to reflect who we are as a community,” Barclift added.

As the ceremony concluded, the community celebrated the new landmark, capturing memories through photos and conversations. “What a great day to live in paradise,” said Herres, encapsulating the spirit of joy and gratitude shared by all in attendance.

The Steel Deer is located on the train tracks between the Tryon Depot and Tryon Family Dentistry.
