Ireland attempted to broaden their horizons on the narrowest possible pitch, almost clipping France’s wings enough before, like poor Icarus, crashing to earth in a bewildering final-quarter muddle.

Were it not for a player better known for scoring goals than stopping them, Ireland would have earned a deserved draw; PSG’s Marie-Antoinette Katoto’s incredulous block in injury time denied them.
