Every so often, it seems that a young GAA bursts onto the inter-county scene and garners the attention of the entire nation. David Clifford is a prime example after his exploits with Kerry in 2018, with Mayo’s Kobe McDonald now going through a similar process.

The teenager has only made two substitute appearances this season, but he is already dominating national headlines with his displays. Being the son of the legendary Ciaran McDonald has played into that somewhat, although his play for club and county over the last 12 months has warranted such a spotlight.

The Crossmolina player is likely to only have one season with Mayo before making his way to the AFL later this year, with there sure to be quite a bit of talk about his potential impact in this summer’s championship over the coming weeks and months.

Kobe McDonald set for Mayo challenge

Kobe McDonald already looks at home at inter-county level. In saying that, it will be interesting to see if his transition to the top level runs quite as smoothly once championship gets underway.

Speaking on RTÉ Radio’s Inside Sport, former Kerry star Colm Cooper suggested that the Mayo youngster is likely to receive much closer attention from opposition teams later in the year. However, he feels his youth could also help him later on in the campaign as the pressure increases on his team.

He has too much quality, too much skill in an area where Mayo don’t have as much depth in my opinion.

The problem is he is going to be a marked man. Everybody will know about him, know what he is capable of, so they’ll keep a close eye on him.

He’s a great player to watch and he shown already in his short inter-county career the quality that he has. It’s going to be a real fun watch watching that guy during the summer…

He can play with freedom and express himself without fear of past defeats and tough days in Croke Park – and we know that Mayo have had their fair share.

He has that innocence, youth and exuberance. It’s very hard for an 18 or 19-year-old to come in and take a game by storm but he is capable of that.

David Clifford has done it, Michael Murphy came in and you had Seán Cavanagh from Tyrone. You saw the top talent in them at 18 or 19, and this guy has the same stuff. With the talent he has, I don’t think Mayo can hold him back.

Mayo will hope to get a big impact from Kobe McDonald over the remainder of the season before the teenager makes his way Down Under, starting with the rest of their league campaign.

If he continues his current run of form, it won’t be long before Andy Moran will be forced to put him into the starting XV.
