Ireland 4-0 Wales

The Ireland men’s hockey team have secured qualification to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, ending an eight-year wait to return to the sport’s largest stage.

Qualification was earned with an emphatic 4-0 win over rivals Wales, with a brace for Jonny Lynch and goal each for Louis Rowe and Matthew Nelson sealing the win.

Ireland got off to the perfect start as Lynch found the roof of the net from the first attacking phase, with Lee Cole playing a long ball up the pitch to Jeremy Duncan who fed Lynch to finish.

A period of calm defensive duties followed for Ireland as they absorbed some Welsh pressure and patiently waited for openings to present themselves, but clear chances were at a premium for the remainder of the first quarter.

Ireland resumed their dominance in the second quarter, Duncan performing his signature move of pulling the ball through his own legs inside the Welsh circle to win the first penalty corner of the match.

Cole went direct but was denied by Toby Reynolds-Cotterill.

Wales, though, were getting some positive outcomes from their high press, the best of which resulted in a half-chance for Benjamin Francis whose effort went over the bar.

Louis Rowe scored Ireland’s second on the night

Ireland weathered the Welsh purple patch and made great use of a period in the attacking third. Clever thinking from Rowe saw him take a free hit quickly and play a one-two with Matthew Nelson before slotting the ball into the back of the net to double Ireland’s lead.

Clearly in the ascendancy, Ireland pressed home their advantage after half-time, pinning Wales back.

Fergus Gibson played an inviting ball into the circle from the right flank towards Lynch who tipped the ball under Reylonds-Cotterill for his second.

Rowe almost matched Lynch’s tally shortly after, picking up the ball expertly and turning into space in the circle, but he saw his slapped effort on goal whizz over the bar.

Duncan was up next to strike a goal, but he found himself reaching for the ball and couldn’t make clean contact.

Ireland’s fourth arrived near the end of the third quarter after an exceptional bit of interplay left Nelson one-on-one with the keeper and he lifted it neatly to the net.

Their ticket to the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup now practically secured, Ireland cruised through the rest of the game.

Ireland will play France in the Final on Sunday, 8 March at 18:45 Irish Time with an opportunity to end their qualification campaign with a perfect record.

Before that, the Ireland women will have a chance to replicate the success of the men as they face Australia in their semi-final this evening (Sat 7 March, 9pm Irish time), the winners earning qualification.
