A Letterkenny man has been put off the road after being caught under the influence of drugs when his car was flagged as having no tax.

Kieran Mongan was stopped by Gardai at Magherabeg, Manorcunningham at 10.19am on April 16, 2025.

Sergeant Jim Collins told Letterkenny District Court that Gardai were operating an automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) check when Mongan’s car showed that it was untaxed.

When Gardai spoke to Mongan, a 25-year-old of Cluain Ard, Killyclug, they believed that he was under the influence of an intoxicant. Following a roadside test, Mongan was conveyed back to Letterkenny Garda Station where a subsequent blood test confirmed the presence of drugs.

Mr Rory O’Brien, solicitor for Mongan, said that his client works in administration and asked the court to give him credit for disposing of the charge.

Judge Emile Daly noted that Mongan entered an early plea and has no previous convictions.

Mongan was disqualified from driving for the mandatory one-year period. Mongan was also fined €200 and given four months to pay.
