A post-mortem will soon be carried out

A body has been recovered by Gardaí and members of the Irish Coast Guard after being discovered along a beach in East Cork by a member of the public earlier this week.

Members of the Guileen Coast Guard were informed of the discovery at Ballycroneen Strand on Wednesday morning, and Gardaí were alerted as they rushed to the scene. They were accompanied by medical professionals, who formally pronounced the man dead after a brief examination.

The deceased is a male aged in his 40s, and Gardaí are conducting enquiries into the incident; however, it’s understood that foul play is not suspected at this time. A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course.

A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo: “Gardaí were alerted to an incident where an unresponsive male was found in the Ballycroneen Strand area, Co. Cork, on Wednesday, 4th March 2026, at approximately 9:30 am.

“The male in his 40s was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body has since been removed from the scene, and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Members of the Guileen Coast Guard thanked the public for alerting them to the incident and gave their condolences to the family of the deceased.

A spokesperson said: “Guileen Coast Guard Unit were tasked [on Wednesday] morning at 09.30 to reports of a body washed ashore at Ballybranigan Beach. The body was later removed by Guileen Coast Guard.

“We want to thank the members of the public for reporting the incident. Also on scene were Midleton Gardai, Midleton Fire Brigade, Dr Hugh Doran, Dr Jason Van Der Velde, National Ambulance Service and Cloyne Community First Responders. “We would like to pass on our deepest sympathies to the person’s family and friends.”
