Reverend Janet Broderick has officially been made Priest-in-charge of five Donegal parishes.

Her appointment was confirmed at a special Service of Introduction at the Inniskeel Parish Church on Friday night.

Rev Broderick will lead churches in the Ardara, Glencolumbkille, Glenties, Inniskeel and Lettermacaward Group of parishes, under the Church of Ireland.

The New York City native is also the sister of Hollywood star Matthew Broderick.

She has been welcomed to her new role in Donegal with open arms, with members of all five parishes represented at Saturday’s Service of Introduction.

Bishop of Derry and Raphoe, Andrew Forster, welcomed Janet’s arrival in the county, saying that parishoners were “delighted.”

“We are delighted that you are here, Janet. We believe that God has sent you to us and we know that God will bless you as you serve amongst us,” Bishop Forster said.

“The journey of faith is also a journey of sacrifice,” the Bishop said, “and tonight there’s a sense of sacrifice because in about five minutes time, Ireland will play Wales, and here we are. So, this is down to you, Janet!”

“I thank you dear Jesus for these marvellous parishes,” Rev Broderick said during the service.

“All so unique in their worship of you, each community dwelling and yet all of us as one.”

Rev Broderick was also welcomed by Archdeacon David Huss, who thanked all in the parish for their hard work and patience as the role had been vacant for twelve months.

After the service, those present – among them a former Rector of the Ardara Group, Rev Canon John Deane – walked the short distance to the parish hall for refreshments and fellowship, and to meet Rev Broderick’s surprise ‘supper guest’ – her pet dog, Moishe!
