Marvel has a new strongest hero, as Spider-Man and Superman combine into a merged form. The superstrong result is a gigantic anti-kaiju warrior, and the newest addition to X-Men lore. Let’s unpack this bizarre combination of franchises…

Spider-Man and Superman Fuse in X-Men Lore… Yes, Really

In the recent X-Men Annual 2026 #1 – from Ryan Stegman, Steve Skroce, Sanford Greene, Arthur Hesli and Clayton Cowles – the X-Men battle a mutant known as the Creationist. After unleashing some titantic monsters on Marvel’s mutants, the villain has a change of heart, summoning a huge superhero to protect Rogue’s team.

The character is intended as “a child’s fever dream of what a super hero looks like”, combining design elements from Marvel’s Spider-Man and DC’s Superman. While Marvel can’t actually use the Man of Steel’s logo, Jubilee does observe, “He looks like Spider-Man crossed with… who’s that guy again?”

With the cape, chest logo, color scheme and trunks on the outside, it’s clear that Marvel is deliberately and hilariously biting Superman’s style, having the Creatonist summon a merged Spider-Man/Superman. However, the character’s powers are no joke, as he uses superstrength to take out the kaiju in seconds and removes them from existence.

The X-Men have a new, godlike student who can summon anything into existence…

While the Spider-Man/Superman combo is a short-lived creation, the character will likely return. That’s because the Creationist ends the issue by accepting the X-Men as his mentors. The story reveals he’s a traumatized mutant who quit Xavier’s school because he’d been raised to fear and be ashamed of his powers.

The Creationist has a unique power – he can summon whatever he can imagine into being, but has little to no creative ability. The X-Men annual sees him kidnap a group of artists to fuel his powers, creating monsters with the ultimate healing factor – whenever they’re injured, he edits their ‘art’ to make it so the damage never happened.

Thankfully, Jean Grey is able to give him some clarity, showing how being raised by mutant-hating parents destroyed his confidence and created an antagonistic relationship with the world around him. The Creationist accepts the X-Men’s criticism and crumples to the ground, saying he’s ready to learn.

That means the X-Men have a new, godlike student who can summon anything into existence. His own artistic instincts may be in their infancy – hence the generic Spider-Man/Superman superhero creation – but thanks to Jean, he’s finally ready to start growing.

The Creationist is only one of the new roster of godlike mutants introduced to X-Men lore. New character Benjamin Liu can warp reality on a massive level, even summoning an alien fleet made up of individual ships and pilots. Meanwhile, Justina LaGuardia instantly manifests a superior version of any power she’s confronted with, including Omega-level abilities.

X-Men has spent the last couple of years introducing some of the most powerful mutants in franchise history, and the Creationist and his Spider-Man/Superman mash-up is the latest. The question that remains is what huge threat X-Men is preparing to introduce that would need heroes this powerful?

X-Men Annual #1 is available now from Marvel Comics.
