One food delivery driver had a very lucky escape from a vehicle that caught fire and completely burnt out on a main street in Cork City last night.
The incident completely closed traffic on Carroll’s Quay and Camden Place and smoke from the fire covered a large area of the surrounding streets. Diversions remain in place this morning on Carroll’s Quay coming into the city.
The small vehicle, witnesses said it appeared to be a Toyota, stopped in the middle of the street as smoke started to pour out of the engine compartment.
Eye-witnesses said a driver, who had a take-away delivery bag, ran from the vehicle and stood watching as the flames quickly took hold and the vehicle completely burnt out.
A Garda spokesperson told CorkBeo: “Gardaà assisted emergency services with an incident of a car on fire that occurred in the Carroll’s Quay area of Cork city on Sunday 8th March 2026 at approximately 7:30 pm.
No injuries have been reported at this time.”
It’s understood the car suffered a serious technical fault that caused fuel to catch fire and the car was engulfed in flames within minutes.
Cork City Councillor John Maher was amongst the many who raised the alarm on social media and advised people to stay away from the area as Cork City Fire Brigade and Gardai responded.
Cllr Maher said he had been told that nobody was injured in the incident. Locals reported hearing loud bangs -believed to be the petrol tank of the car exploding as the flames completely gutted the vehicle.
Traffic around Camden Place and Carroll’s Quay will be restricted this morning.
