Grids are a fundamental part of design. Arranging elements within a set framework allows designers to experiment with different visual and spatial compositions, before finally arriving at the one that works best. When creating this Versova home, architects Huzefa Rangwala and Jasem Pirani from MuseLAB asked the question: what if this fundamental design element became the star of the show?

The strong colour theme starts with the apple-green wall of the living room, and the protruding geometric motifs on the ceiling.

Amoeba-like forms unfold on the floor, accented by coral marble inlays that mirror the geomteric forms on the ceiling.

“It emerged from the idea of having something structured and organised, but in a playful manner,” the architects explain, “gingham is a motif that immediately suggests order, but we wanted to push it beyond its rigidity.” And push they did— MuseLAB’s practice can be easily identified by a willingness to be playful, and explore all possible avenues of an idea.

The first step in shaking up the rigidity of a grid came in the form of colour. This Versova home is a veritable feast for the eyes, with light apple-green walls greeting you as you enter into the living room. The grid unfolds underfoot, inlaid in marble and punctuated by amoeba-like forms that are muted green, complimenting the bolder colour of the wall. The flooring is accented by coral geometric forms that are also echoed on the ceiling. The grid leads us to the dining area where coral marble crawls upwards as the legs of the dining table, and appears as inlaid motifs on the tabletop that are meant to represent the family’s beloved board games.
