Bosch is back! Or, rather, Titus Welliver will soon be back as Harry Bosch in the upcoming Season 2 of the Bosch spin-off Ballard. After starring as the titular detective in seven seasons of Bosch, Welliver returned to the role for three seasons of the sequel series Bosch: Legacy, which concluded last year. Welliver clearly can’t get enough of the character and fans can’t get enough, either, with the actor set to reprise his role in Ballard. In what capacity Welliver will appear, however, is yet to be seen, though the casting update also confirmed that Season 2 of the series is expected sometime later this year.
The casting reveal and release date tease was in a report from Deadline, who announced that Benjamin Bratt had joined Ballard. Given that we’re still relatively fresh into 2026, that could mean quite a wait for audiences, but knowing we won’t be heading into 2027 without more Bosch will come as a relief.
Season 2 of Ballard will follow Maggie Q’s LAPD Detective Renée Ballard as she leads an underfunded cold-case division. Also starring in the new season are Ever Carradine, Courtney Taylor, Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, and John Carroll Lynch.
‘Bosch’ Quietly Reigned Supreme Over Streaming
In some respects, Bosch feels like a figment of a collective imagination, as it is somehow both ever-present yet also underseen. Premiering in 2014, the series was a flagship title for Prime Video at a time when streaming platforms were on the rise, yet not the dominating force in entertainment that they are now. While Bosch regularly had to compete with genre titles in pop culture, at a time when Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead were at the forefront of many audiences’ minds, the Prime Video series was based on the immensely popular books by Michael Connelly.
Even though Bosch might not have been the most popular title when TV fans discussed their favorite series, there was enough interest to maintain audiences for seven seasons and to inspire multiple spin-offs. Impressively, while Season 1 of Bosch scored a promising 84% positive score from critics on aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, each subsequent season sits at 100% positive. Admittedly, by the time critics got to Season 7, only eight scores were tabulated, which shows how viewers weren’t entirely clamoring for updates on the series.
All three seasons of Bosch: Legacy, as well as Season 1 of Ballard, all similarly scored 100% from critics. Despite being heralded by critics and maintaining an audience, it never crossed over into the realm of “prestige TV.” Even with those impressive ratings, and with Welliver regularly receiving acclaim for his performance as Detective Bosch, the show only ever secured a single Emmy Award nomination, which was for Outstanding Main Title Design, which it lost to the TV series Manhattan.
