Mayo County Council will not be approving planning permission for wind farms in the county, until their Renewable Energy Strategy is updated.

The decision comes after local Fine Gael Councillor Jarlath Munnelly brought a motion before yesterday’s monthly meeting of Mayo County Council and the motion was unanimously supported.

He says the current framework is not suitable for modern-day wind turbines, as they are now much larger than when the strategy was first introduced.

He also believes that the current rules allow for wind farms to be built too close to homes, and that the future of renewable energy should be offshore.
