Kerry County Council plans to provide a pilot campervan facility somewhere in the county this year.

A recent meeting of the Listowel Municipal District was told that the location of that facility has not yet been chosen.

The issue of a lack of campervan facilities in Kerry has been raised several times over the last few years by elected representatives.

Now, Kerry County Council has confirmed it intends to deliver a pilot campervan facility in this county this year.

It says it’s finalising a draft framework for campervan and motorhomes, which will outline guidelines that are clear, consistent, and sustainable.

This draft framework is expected to be presented to the council’s Economic Strategic Policy Committee this month.

The council says this draft framework aims to support tourism, safeguard local communities, and protect the natural environment.

The location for this campervan facility has not yet been chosen, and the council says this will happen after the Economic SPC members have given their consideration and comments later this month.

Fine Gael councillor Aoife Kennelly, who raised the issue at the recent Listowel MD meeting, said Ballybunion would be the ideal location for the pilot campervan facility.

She said it already has everything needed to cater for tourists.

Cllr Kennelly said that it would kill two birds with one stone to locate it in Ballybunion, as it would also reduce illegal parking there.
