'Dream come true': Clare woman to fly the flag for Ireland as she chases dream race

Clare native Laura O’Connell is gearing up for the race of her life later this month as she represents Ireland at the Racing Women Nations Trophy in Donington Park, UK.

The Ennis woman is bidding for a top-two finish in the international showdown, which would secure her a sponsored drive in the Radical Gulf Championships in Abu Dhabi.

“To represent Ireland in the Nations Trophy is going to be a dream come true and in some way make up for the disappointment of Formula Woman Nations Cup cancellation,” Laura said.

She admits the competition will be fierce, but her preparation has been relentless.

“Since starting my racing journey, I have driven everything from Karts to 800bhp saloons to sports prototypes. This has helped me hone my skills and prepare me for my championship training in the UK this month.

“A lot goes into the preparation for a big race from the fitness training, mental training, sim work and the all-important seat time spent on the track; there is a lot to it. I’ve been putting long hours and hard work into my training as well as investing in testing, conditioning and driver coaches.

“If I can translate all of that into the race in Donington in September, I know I stand a real chance of winning the Nations Trophy for Ireland and landing that all-important sponsored drive in the Gulf Championship.”

O’Connell also reflected on her recent progress after a strong test session.

“I had a great test day in August that gave me the experience around the Donington track. It was my first time on track with the other Racing Women drivers since the qualifiers for the Formula Women Nations Cup last December. I was impressed with the standard of everyone there, but I really feel that I have progressed since then.”

Looking ahead, she said: “The competition is going to be fierce, but I’m committed to giving it everything. This is about proving that I belong at this level and continuing to break down barriers for women in motorsport.”
