It is day 8,000 of the Timothée Chalamet ballet-opera drama, and people are still angry at Kylie Jenner’s boyfriend for saying that “no one cares” about the classical arts. On Sunday, former prima ballerina Misty Copeland joined the chorus of famous people slamming Chalamet for his comments. During a panel put on by Aveeno, Copeland said that, as one of the many celebrities who took part in the Marty Supreme press cycle, she was offended by his anti-ballet sentiment. “First, I have to say that it’s very interesting that he invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme with respect to my art form,” she said, apparently referring to a photo of her in the movie’s signature bomber jacket, which was posted to the film’s official Instagram account in November.

Copeland went on to defend ballet’s relevance in modern culture. “I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that, yes, this is an art form that is not ‘popular’ and as much a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have enduring relevance in culture,” she said. “And I think that it’s often mistaken when something is popular, that it’s more meaningful or more impactful. But there’s a reason that opera and ballet have been around for over 400 years.” Copeland said that Chalamet “wouldn’t be an actor and have the opportunities he has as a movie star if it weren’t for opera and ballet.” “So all of these mediums have a space and we shouldn’t be comparing them,” she concluded.

I sure hope Timothée didn’t give one of those jackets to Pavarotti.
