Max Dowman makes history as Arsenal grab late win to maintain title charge

Sixteen-year-old Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history as he sealed Arsenal’s last-gasp 2-0 victory over Everton in stoppage time at the Emirates Stadium to take them one step closer to a first Premier League title in 22 years.

The hosts dominated the beginning of the contest, but it was the Toffees who had created the better chances by the halfway point, including a woodwork-rattling attempt by Dwight McNeil.

‘This is the best opportunity’ for Arsenal

Redknapp thinks this is Arsenal’s best chance to win the title now.

“It’s credit to Mikel Arteta that they are in the position they are now,” he explains.

“This is the best opportunity [to win the title] because Man City haven’t been as strong as they have been previously.

“But they are going to make Arsenal work hard. There’s no forgone conclusion just yet, but they are in a fantastic position.”

‘Magical’ Max Dowman becomes youngest ever Premier League goalscorer in crunch Arsenal win over Everton

Arsenal midfielder Max Dowman became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history after a stunning solo effort sealed the Gunners’ win over Everton on Saturday night.

The England youth international wrapped up a potentially pivotal Arsenal win with nearly the last kick of the game to take the Gunners 10 points clear at the top of the Premier League, and at 16 years and 73 days, he becomes the youngest scorer in league history ahead of former Everton player James Vaughan.

The impact the finishers are having this season is remarkable’

“The impact the finishers are having this season is remarkable. Everybody is important and adding to the team,” continued Arteta.

“There are times when we have to patient because with all the dominance and the amount of shots we have when we don’t score, the anxiety is building.

“You have to stay composed, be relentless in your desire to win the game and make something happen. The team had the spirit today.”

On Gyokeres, he adds: “He does so many good things for the team and today he scored a massive goal – he had to be in the right moment, in the right spot and he certainly was to help us win the game.”

Arteta on Dowman

Here’s what Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta had to say on Dowman and his role in the win:

“It was a great moment, especially with the way the goal built up. We had 10 or 15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen.

“It was magical, all the bench and players together jumping up with the crowd, it was a beautiful day.

“He changed the game every time he got the ball. He made things happen and we looked like more of a threat. To do it at that age, in this context, with the pressure and expectations to win the game, it’s just not normal.

“It’s natural for him. He doesn’t feel the pressure – that’s the best thing. He does what he feels and when you have such a talent, I’m sure good things are going to happen,” he added.

More from Redknapp

“I’ve not won a title but I know how to lose one. The anxiety just comes on you and transfers to the fans,” continues Redknapp.

“Mikel Arteta looked like cat on a hot tin roof. The anxiety was getting to him.

“Dowman came on and was just like, ‘it’s ok, I am here. I am going to take care of this.

“That was the difference in the game. It was incredible how he kept his nerve and didn’t let anything affect him because others were letting it affect them.”

That result leaves Arsenal 10 points ahead of Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

City have two games in hand over the Gunners, one of which comes in a few minutes as they take on West Ham at the London Stadium.

More from Redknapp on Dowman

“The pace and the power that he possesses, he can transfer the ball from right foot to left foot. He is just so calm,” adds Jamie Redknapp on Max Dowman.

“There is a swagger about this guy that I haven’t seen with many footballers.

“I remember seeing Steven Gerrard at 16 or 17, and being blown away by his talent.

“Coming on at 16 and changing a Premier League game of this magnitude, because you have to put it into context, if Arsenal don’t win today this swings it massively into City’s favour.

“Dowman changed everything when he came on,” he added.
