When you boil it down to its essence, Father Ted was about providing answers to the question: what do priests do all day? Sometimes I ask myself the same question about RTÉ’s top executives, but alas, the answers do not come so easily. And when they do, they are not very amusing.

Take the example of Arena, (weekdays, 7pm) RTÉ1’s arts programme which is presented on weeknights by Rick O’Shea. It was always going to be difficult to find a suitable replacement for the late and much-loved Seán Rocks, but Rick, fair play to him, has answered the call.
