The Virgin Media documentary seems to be aimed at an international audience unfamiliar with the Irish cultural landscape of the 1980s, and why Shergar was such an important symbol of national pride

You might find yourself wondering during Shergar: The Racehorse and the IRA (Virgin Media One, Wednesday, March 18, and on Virgin Media Play) why veteran investigative journalist Peter Murtagh is delivering a mini-lesson in Irish history.
The reason is this two-part documentary, which Channel 4 will also be showing, is clearly aimed at an international audience who might have little to no knowledge of the political backdrop to the 1983 kidnapping by the IRA of racing’s most valuable horse.
