REVEALED: Locations of new CCTV cameras planned in safety boost for Limerick

THE NEW garda commissioner Justin Kelly has approved the introduction of a new suite of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in Limerick.

New cameras are going to be installed in four locations along the Castletroy Greenway.

On top of this, the People’s Park in the city centre will see four new cameras.

There’s going to be a new CCTV scheme covering 15 locations in both Kileely and Garryowen.

Weston Gardens will see CCTV at one location.

In the county, Rathkeale is getting new CCTV at four locations.

The move has been welcomed across the political spectrum.

Former Defence Minister Willie O’Dea said: “This is brilliant news for the communities where these cameras will be located as local people were crying out for these cameras to help deal with anti-social behaviour and crime.”

The focus now shifts to Limerick City and County Council which will need to seek out a company to deliver on the cameras.

Following the installation of the units, they would then need to be connected up to the gardai’s systems.

Labour TD Conor Sheehan said: “There is currently only one working camera in Garryowen and the area is a policing blackspot.

The lack of a comprehensive CCTV system allowed criminals to act without fear of being apprehended, and impeded the work of An Garda Siochana.”

Independent councillor Elena Secas particularly welcomed the proposal to install CCTV along Castletroy Greenway, which she feels, has become a criminal hotspot.
