Donegal residents may get a chance to view the northern lights this Thursday.
A G2 solar storm, which is considered a moderate strength, is forecasted by the Space Weather Prediction Centre for the night of 19th March, and is likely to weaken into the 20th.
The activity follows a coronal mass ejection, or CME, which left the sun two days earlier.
The UK Met Office forecasts a likely chance of aurora at higher latitudes, where skies are clear, either late on 19 March or early on 20th March.
Donegal’s north coast is considered one of the best places to watch for the phenomenon, thanks to its view over the Atlantic and its distance from built-up, brightly lit areas. Anyone hoping to spot the lights is advised to look north.
If conditions are clear enough, the aurora may be visible to the naked eye as a pale white or greenish glow on the northern horizon.
