The consortium tasked to build a new hospital in Mississauga that will be the largest health-care facility in Canada when it opens in 2034 has received an international award.
Mississauga-based EllisDon and PCL Construction (North American headquarters located in Edmonton) are completing the “state-of-the-art” hospital build along with partners Fengate Asset Management and Plenary Americas.
The group recently accepted an award for The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital, being built at a cost of $13.9 billion on the site of the current Mississauga Hospital at Hurontario Street and The Queensway.
The massive hospital project was named the 2025 IJGlobal PPP Deal of the Year — North America. PPP, or P3, means the hospital is being completed under a public-private partnership agreement.
The IJGlobal Awards celebrate outstanding greenfield and refinancing projects across the global energy and infrastructure sectors, “recognizing teams that successfully deliver complex deals with lasting value,” EllisDon said on its website in delivering news of the award.
Company officials added that while the annual awards are primarily geared to equity investors and developers, “the success of this landmark transaction reflects the efforts of hundreds of individuals across design, construction, facilities services and other teams.”

Jeff Brace, head of infrastructure for EllisDon Capital, said the international recognition “highlights the strength of the public‑private partnership model and the close collaboration between development partner PCL, clients Trillium Health Partners and Infrastructure Ontario, and equity partners Fengate Asset Management and Plenary Americas.
“It also reflects the important contributions of lenders and advisors who helped establish a new benchmark for megaproject financing in Canada. While the full list of contributors is extensive, this award belongs to everyone who played a role.”
Trillium Health Partners operates Mississauga and Credit Valley hospitals in addition to the Queensway Health Centre on the Mississauga-Etobicoke border.
When finished in 2033, and open to its first patients the following year, The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will cover 2.8 million square feet and rise 22 storeys. The 200,000-sq.-ft. Shah Family Hospital for Women and Children, to be Ontario’s first health-care centre to focus exclusively on the well-being of women and children, will be located within the much larger hospital.

The new Mississauga hospital (see video below) is being built on the same site as the current hospital at Hurontario Street and The Queensway, where it’s been situated since first opening in 1958.
It will be triple the size of the current hospital and is expected to deliver health care to 2.2 million people annually once it opens, the provincial government said in announcing the beginning of construction last year.
Other features of The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital include:
More than 950 patient beds.
26 operating rooms, an increase from the current 14.
A new and expanded emergency department that will be one of the largest in the province and is expected to reduce wait times and improve the patient experience.
Advanced diagnostic imaging facilities and a new pharmacy and clinical laboratory.
“The Peter Gilgan Mississauga Hospital will allow Trillium Health Partners to increase flexibility to respond to future health-care challenges, feature modern hospital facilities and technology, and reflect the latest standards in infection prevention and control,” THP officials said on the health-care organization’s website. “The hospital will continue to deliver highly specialized care through our regional programs such as the regional centre for cancer care, advanced cardiac surgery and geriatric mental health services, among others.”
