Coronation Street fans were left on the verge of tears after Wednesday night’s episode. The world’s longest-running TV soap has been airing a grooming storyline for months now, and things are just starting to come to a head.
Schoolteacher Megan Walsh, played by Beth Nixon, has been carrying out an illicit affair with her student Will Driscoll, and it has been heavily implied that it has been going on since long before his sixteenth birthday. While all this has been going on, Megan, who was introduced as the teenager’s private athletics coach, has started up a fake relationship with Daniel Osbourne (Rob Mallard) although she is pregnant with Will’s baby.
Will’s schoolmate Sam, who is in the year below, was the only one to have worked it out but when Megan started threatening him about, he turned to pills to cope and then experienced an overdose.

This all led to him confessing the truth to his stepmum Leanne (Jane Danson), and in turn, his aunty Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley), who is in a relationship with Will’s father Ben. The two women, along with their sister Toyah (Georgia Taylor) gave Megan the opportunity to explain herself but the three of them, dubbed the Witches of Weatherfield by fans, quickly knew she was lying and set about taking action.
On Wednesday’s episode, Eva waited nervously as she knew she had to inform Ben, who had been out the day before celebrating St Patrick’s Day. After she tentatively broke the news, Ben was almost in tears as he said: “Will’s just a wee boy… My boy… And we invited her into his life!
“Athletics coach… She’ll be laughing herself stupid. Was this going on in Hull?” Viewers are aware that it has indeed been going on long before they moved to Weatherfield to buy the Rovers Return, but Eva admitted that’s just something they would have to find out for themselves.

Ben then tried to coax the truth out of Will, but he simply claimed to have had a crush on Megan and that she had rejected his advances – a lie which Ben initially believed. But suspicions had started to grow from everywhere around, as barmaid Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) cornered Will’s brother Ollie to tell him she thought something was going on months ago. She explained: “She started going out with Daniel so I didn’t say anything, I thought I’d got the wrong idea. Had I not?”
Back at school, Megan walked through the corridor with Will and she instructed him to pack a bag before Daniel came on the scene. Clearly not taken in by the conversation with Will earlier, Ben, Eva and Leanne headed to the police station to report Megan. Back at school, Daniel was just trying to tempt Megan into a drink after work when the police arrived and arrested her on the spot.

Sam was informed by his elders that he will likely be expected to give evidence in court, a prospect that frightened the shy schoolboy, but he vowed to go through with it. DC Kit Green then told the Driscolls that Megan was being kept in custody overnight and left them to it, but a blazing row broke out between the family as they each threw the blame on one another, as Will wept on the stairs.
Viewers were quick to react to the dramatic episode, with one fan declaring on X: “#Corrie made my blood run cold!” Another viewer, eager to know what happens next, expressed their disdain with the new half-hour format of the episodes. They wrote: “it’s times like these i miss hour long episodes #corrie that scene where ben finds out nearly caused tears. [crying emoji] there’s not enough in the 30minutes to really unravel it i need to wait now to get the second half!”
A third predicted: “megan’s going to try to “dump” will and run just like what she did with that other boy. the one who chased her 3 postcodes for an explanation!”
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
